Journeys lease coming and going, arriving or leaving. You leave to begin or end a journey or head to another destination. Muindi uses the enounce the last journey, also the title, continuously throughout the poem. This is the blanket(a) metaphor, representing death. It is the last journey for our known or current lives. The destination that is being referred to could be heaven, hell or something beyond our check off and to one extent, our world.
The second half of the phrase …when you shall depart implies that you are leaving, going but it doesnt give any singularity on whether you will be coming back or jaunting to another destination, just that you will be leaving.

The stepping stones used in the poem are giving us hints of what we are leading towards. Each stanza has a new stepping stone which takes us closer and closer to the bigger picture. The statements or phrases within the stanzas allude to different ways of thinking.
