In John Updikes A&P, Sammy, a xix year old cashier at a local anesthetic securities industry reposition meets three bathing suit wrapped girls who end up affecting his entire life. The author has chosen to present this story through first psyche smear of view. By allowing the story to be told in first person point of view the reader can truly tug a reading of Sammys personality and background. Sammy quit his hypothesise because of his customers, his fellow workers, and boredom.
One of the reasons that Sammy ends up quitting his job are the customers at the A&P. He is bored with his job at the A&P, and some rather intense opinions about the customers, who he refers to as sheep. It is a summer day as Sammy is tending to his prevalent duties when three girls in bathing suits enter the grocery store where he works. These girls are different and peculiar which is what catches his attention. Sammy attempts to ring up their purchase when the manager, Mr. Lengel walks up to the girls and tells then that they are improperly dolled up to be computer storageping in the store. At this point they are asked to dress decently the next time they come to the grocery store. Sammy decides at this point that he is going to tell Mr. Lengel that he is quitting. Realizing that Sammy may be onerous to impress the girls, he gives him a chance to change his mind.
Sammy doesnt change his mind and the conclusiveness to leave his job will forever change the trend of his life.
Sammy does not respect his boss, Mr. Lengel. Mr. Lengel seems as though he is trying to run an upstanding store and tries to show that the girls who are scantily dressed need to dress more appropriately to shop at the A&P. Sammy however feels as though Mr. Lengel is attempting to stymy these girls as a way to show his power. He does not feel that his boss was being fair to the three girls in how he handled the situation with the girls.
