The Language Police
Throughout The Language Police, the angered author, Diane Ravitch, speaks her mind on the issue of censoring. Censorship shelters students from the real world and gives them a bogus sense of reality. Ravitch believes that students are being censored to such an extremum that their freedom is being limited. The goal of the language constabulary is not just to stop us from using objectionable wrangle but to stop us from having objectionable thoughts (Ravitch 158). The language police are restricting what students learn by removing anything that may go forth controversial. Diane believes the language police are trying to win an unrealizable battle, a battle in which the world is perfect.
Diane Ravitch was appointed to the matter Assessment Governing Board (NAGB) in the early 1990s and was assigned to review reading passages for the fourth-grade tests taken by students across the United States. Ravitch and the other members on the committee objective was to regulate short reading passages and test questions that gauge childrens experience of what they had read, and reject passages that seemed dull, obscure, or incoherent (Ravitch 6). Coming to find out, passages that were approve by her committee were removed from tests for not passing the prejudice and sensitivity guidelines created by the VNT.
Ravitch gave the following example which was considered predetermine:
The bias panel rejected a passage about a silly old woman who keeps piling to a greater extent and more gadgets on her bicycle until it is so overloaded that it tumbles over. They felt that it contained a negative stereotype of an eccentric old woman who ceaselessly changed her mind. The bias panel thought that children would get the wrong liking about older women if the read such a story. They major power conclude that all women of certain age behaved in this way.
