Colby Cargile Professor Hendricks Comp I 31 January 2010 Confrontation in the media Shows such as Crossfire, Hardball, and The Capital Gang all have one topic in common, they feed America’s appetite for confrontation. With Crossfire and Hardball as titles, viewers know what they are getting into when then tack the channel over to the news networks that air these broadcasts. In Deborah Tannen’s “TV’s War of Words†she exemplifies the nature of the “ repugn†shows saying “by turning everything into a oddover-right fight, the argument glossiness gives us trumped-up, showcase debates between two oversimplified sides, leaving no room for the real arguments. With everything being black and white it gives no room for the grey area. It stereotypes everyone as either being left or right, correct or incorrect, it leaves us without agree. The media’s determination is with keeping people divided. Tannen states that “Ann Coutler a commentator for the right finds that when she takes a position that doesn’t fit the producers idea of conservatism, they don’t want her.†But why is it television does this? Simply because of picture and demand. Its what people want to see. These networks just satisfy the publics argumentative expressive style of life.
